Elemi essential oil

Elemi Essential oil

Elemi Canarium luzonicum essential oil is from the Burseraceae family. Other essential oils from this family are Palo Santo, Opopanax, and Linaloe wood. Elemi essential oil comes from the gum resin of the Canary tree which is usually found in Philippines and Indonesia. The essential oil is made by steam distillation from the gum resin and has a fresh balsamic lemony spice aroma. Elemi has been around since the biblical times being used in embalming blends along with Frankincense and Myrrh.. The Elemi tree is on the threaten species list.

Some believe Elemi is a carcinogenic due the chemical methyleugenol which is one of the many chemicals in the oil, but in fact is not a carinogenic. The reason Elemi is not a carcinogenic even though methyleugenol is present is because the levels of the chemical is very small and not significant enough to be carcinogenic. Plus the levels of (t)-limonene is likely to counter any potentially hepatocarcinogenic effect of the amount of methyleugenol according to Robert Tisserand. The Elemi essential oil when oxidized can cause skin sensitization. These are the only safety issues that are known.

Along with methyleugenol the other chemical components are elemol, dipentene, limonene, phellandrene, elemicin, terpineol, and other minor constituents. Due to these chemical components that are many ways this oil can be used from perfume blends to therapeutic blends. The aroma of Elemi is perfect for both men and women perfume blends and blends well with frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, ginger, sage, lavender, rosemary to mention a few. It used in the perfume industry for its resinoid and fixtative qualities for perfumes. The therapeutic components makes Elemi an excellent choice to use in aromatherapy and is used for a top note oil for uplifting, meditating, and calming properties. Elemi is used for the therapeutic issues such as respiratory infections, chronic coughs, bronchitis, fatigue, skin conditions, stress, and sinusitis. It may also help with arthritis and rheumatism when used in a blend. The type of application diffusing, inhaling, and topical will all depend on the reason you will be needing Elemi for. Respiratory will usually be inhaling/diffusing and pain would be a topical blend. Perfume can be in an oil blend or a cream blend.

A male client asked me to make him a perfume blend. To create this blend we had to blend the oils slowly one drop at a time. During the process I had him smell the oils until we created the scent he wanted. This did not happen in a few hours. In fact this creation took a few days as to let the oils set as the aroma changed until it settled. Below is the blend and type of recipe he chose for his own personal blend.

1 oz Jojoba oil

5 drops of Elemi

5 drops Frankincense

3 drops Patchouli

1 drop of Cinnamon

3 drops Bergamot

If you choose to use this recipe please check on any safety and health issues the other essential oils in the blend may have.
